About FutureFuel

FutureFuel is a quest for answers to the big questions of our time. It’s my personal search for answers to urgent questions about the future of mankind, the future of my generation and my own.

My name is Anne Walraven. At 26, being a graduated-unemployed-confused-twentysomething-with-quarterlife-crisis, I started searching for answers to the big questions of our time. I called my quest FutureFuel: the power of young people as fuel for the future. It became a journey across 4 continents, interviewing 15 of the most inspiring doers and thinkers of the planet. I didn’t have any connections, budget or experience as a journalist, but I did have a huge drive to find answers to my questions.

Can anybody tell me how the world works? And what is the role of the young generation regarding the enormous challenges we are facing right now?

So now I travel the world. By e-mailing a simple request I arrange interviews with the most extraordinary visionaries, entrepreneurs, CEOs, activists and scientists across the globe. Can anybody tell me how the world works? And what is the role of the young generation regarding the enormous challenges we are facing right now? Never did I suspect that this journey would have such a bizarre impact on my personal development.

At the moment I am working on an encyclopedi… eh, book about my project, that will be published by Carrera Publishers in spring, 2016. There’s also a documentary in the making of my journey, called Anne’s Quest.

‘Who are the interviewees?’

From the foreign advisor of President Obama to a famous visionary, from a 20-year-old CEO to an environmentalist who lived in a tree for two years and a Greenlandic shaman: these are the great doers and thinkers who contributed to the FutureFuel quest. Read more.

‘Why did you start this quest?’

Because I am worried about our planet and my own future. Because I just can’t sit around and watch countless young people desperately searching for a job or ending up with careers that don’t really suit them, in which their potential lies idle. Doesn’t the world need us at all? Especially now? Read more

‘Where do you get the money from?’

For each interview people can make a donation to send in their own, personal question for the interviewee. This combination of crowdfunding and crowdsourcing often results in fun and unexpected answers. Plus, it enables me to travel around the globe. Read more

‘But how does the world work?’

The insights from my journey have put a diversity of developments on this planet in perspective – from climate change and the financial crisis, to the Arab Spring and the battle for internet freedom. The interviews offer a positive outlook on the future. Read more

‘Who are you?’

In my teens I read two books that were the inspiration to commit myself passionately to sustainability on our planet; You Can Change the World by Ervin Laszlo and The Legacy of Luna by Julia Butterfly Hill. With FutureFuel I have created my dream job. Read more
